SAVANNAH RECOMMENDS KEEPING TRACK OF FAMILY HISTORY

Savannah

Here is my first portrait of my grand daughter, Savannah.  I took the reference photographs in July.  The painting which I completed six months later is now out of date!
Check out the upcoming exhibition Shaped by the Past for six different creative explorations into family history by the ARTforce Collective.  Dates and location are below on your invitation.

FOGGY

The weather is foggy and so is the show at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre.  Every year at this time the Arts Council invites the Friends of the Gallery to enter one piece in a group show called the F.O.G. for short.  Many exciting and diverse pieces are on exhibit until February 2 2013 including my painting of the forest floor.

Summer Art

Two art classes and a week long art residency with my Vancouver critique group were stimulating.
Todd Clarke is a well known local artist who tweaked my abstract inclinations. In this case a tarp in the yard was necessary to accommodate cutting loose on the 36" x 48" canvas.

Michael O'Toole's class offered by the Gibsons School of the Arts led my focus to contrast and gradations in landscape paintings. BroughtonIslet

Renting a place in the Strathcona area of Vancouver for our group to work together was a great success.
Good food, good drink, good discussions and even a Pop Up Art Show on the front steps!

Summer Fun

Summer was wonderful on the Sunshine Coast.
July 1st we marched some children's street banners in the Canada Day parade for the Arts Council. Kayaking, hiking and hanging out at the beach filled in between art activities.

April First, No foolin'

Spring is on its way and my granddaughter helped me plant peas seedlings last week.
A few days ago we took a walk in the woods with her dad and saw a glimpse of a pale sunbeam but there had been a snow shower in the morning!

What to Paint in the Winter

Breugel seems to have painted in the snow along with quite a few others but not too many artists paint in the rain. Despite getting a classy new pochade box for Christmas I have not been painting outdoors.
It has been cold, windy and rainy. I ventured out on the porch to paint the rainstorm on a day that it was actually clear enough to see Vancouver Island.
Rain on the Island

Most of the paintings I have been doing since Christmas have been small...4 inches by six inches. They don't take too long and I have been learning a lot.
This series of small paintings began when I was bemoaning the lack of a view and instead painted my brushes and tools sitting on the studio windowsill.

From there I branched out to the kitchen windowsill. This is influencing my grocery shopping!

Sunshine Coast Art Crawl 2011

The second annual Sunshine Coast Art Crawl was a huge success with double the attendance of the first Art Crawl.
It was great to welcome 200 visitors to my temporary galleries outside my tiny house in Davis Bay. The sun shone on the fall flowers and everyone had a great time.

I enjoyed welcoming friends to my once a year galleries and sending my art away to new homes.

You are Invited!

Please stop in to view my paintings in the lobby of the Waterfront Theatre on Granville Island when you next go to market. The Waterfront Theatre is just to your right after you enter the Island and even if it is not open you will be able to see the larger paintings through the windows.
The poster includes a reminder about the Sunshine Coast Art Crawl, back by popular demand after its wildly successful first year. Hope to see you there.

Adventures in Art Education

This winter and spring I was taught by two terrific instructors at Emily Carr University.
Here are two of the still life studies I completed under James Lindfield's eagle eye in "An Introduction to Oil Painting" As usual you can click on the painting to see a larger image and more information.

Still Life with Ivory Fish 10 x10"

Tasty 16 x 20"

Lisa Birke kept me working at an intense pace in acrylics completing short acrylic studies in "Landscapes and Natural Elements." Both of the classes got me going outside to paint "en plein air." Here is a small painting I completed in the woods near my home. I have been painting sitting on the ground where friendly dogs can be a real hazard.

Stumps
Two stumps was painted on a panel with paints that I received from supplies left by Tom Hopkins at his wife's west coast retreat. Tom's passing resulted in many tributes about his generosity to student artists. You can view some of his work at this link www.metiviergallery.com/artist_collection.php?artist=hopkins

I continued to push my boundaries and experiment with oils under the instruction of Liz Wiltzen at the Gibsons School of the Arts 5 day course in July. Another stellar instructor; see her work at www.mountainartist.com! Here she is demonstrating under the gazebo at the end of Gibsons Pier.

After watching Liz I completed this little study from the gazebo in an hour working smaller than ever before on a panel 4.5 x 6" with bigger than usual brushes .
From Gibsons 4.5 x 6"

Robert Genn dropped in for a day during Wiltzen's class. Here he is painting on unperturbed in spite of the thunder shower and excited helpers.

Since the weather does not always cooperate here are a few more small landscape studies painted indoors from my photographs.

At the End of the Bay 9 x 12"
The Bay in this painting is an early spring view from the cabin where Tom Hopkins lived on his west coast trips.

May

At last it is spring and warming up in my garden. The painting below is one of my first attempts at painting in oils. I started it during the winter while I was enrolled in an "Introduction to Oil Painting" class at Emily Carr University in Vancouver. It is based on four photographs I took in late October.
Now that the weather is warmer and I feel more comfortable with the oil paints I will be working on a number of small plein air studies. I look forward to posting a few soon.

Contact Sheila

Ann from Ontario managed to tracked me down yesterday. She wanted to buy a painting she had seen when she visited the coast.
I had to say "Sorry, it has sold." Ann suggested that I add my contact information to this site.
Thanks for the suggestion Ann.

New Work now on exhibit at The Gumboot Restaurant

The Crossing
Crossing Georgia Strait on a calm summer's day can be a surreal experience.
Any time that we are suspended between places, ideas and feelings boundaries can dissolve.

The end of summer in the mountains comes quickly and the mists move in to chill the autumn air.

Sheila is showing at the Gumboot Restaurant November 8 to December 5, 2010

The Gumboot Restaurant Roberts Creek

I am looking forward to hanging a dozen paintings in the Gumboot Restaurant for the month of November.
It is always hard for the art to catch anyone's attention at The Gumboot.
The competition is the yummy food, charming wait staff and the local gossip in this friendly location.

Thank you to everyone who visited my home on the ART CRAWL. It was such fun to chat with you.
I really appreciated your interest and support.
